Trademarks
A trademark is a sign used in the course of trade to identify the origin of goods or services and tell them apart from others. A trademark helps customers know where a product comes from. Trademarks can be registered in one or multiple countries, to protect one or multiple products or service categories.
Registered Designs
A registered design protects how a product looks, including its shape, a pattern or surface decoration. It does not protect how the product works, only its appearance.
Patents
A patent protects a new invention, such as a product or process. It gives the inventor exclusive rights to use the invention for a set period of time in exchange for public disclosure in the patent register.
Unregistered Rights
Copyright
Copyright protects original creative works like writing, images, music, videos, software and artwork. It applies automatically when the work is created and fixed in a form that can be shared or recorded. No formal registration is required in order to have protection.
Design & UK Supplementary
Unregistered design rights protect the shape or appearance of a product without needing formal registration. They automatically come to be when a design is created and published and have shorter duration than a Registered Design.
